Record and Report: Making Housing Vouchers Work for More New Yorkers by Reporting Discrimination
August 4 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Discrimination against housing choice vouchers – such as Section 8, CityFHEPS, and HASA – is the most common form of illegal housing bias in NYC. When prospective tenants mention their voucher, landlords and brokers often turn them down, “ghost” them, or unlawfully set requirements or special rules for them. Housing discrimination takes a heavy toll on both the mental and physical wellbeing of prospective tenants, keeping thousands of New Yorkers homeless or in unsafe living conditions for months or even years.
At Unlock NYC, we build easy-to-use mobile tools to record and report this type of housing discrimination. In this training, you’ll learn what source of income (SOI) discrimination sounds like, how to report it, and what can happen after a report is filed. We’ll give you a demo of Unlock NYC’s online reporting chatbot, answer your questions, and discuss actions you can take to fight for fair housing for all New Yorkers.
